[music] hi, this is don mcallister, and welcome to another training video from screencastsonline. in this video, i'll show you how to get the mostout of your ipad by explaining and demonstrating all of itsfeatures from scratch. no previous ipad, mac, or pc experience is assumed as i'll take you through the basics. and by the end of the video, you'll be an ipadexpert. the video covers the ipad 2 and ios5, but most if
not all of the software features covered are available on the original ipad once upgradedto ios5. the video is organized into chapters and subchapters, so if at any time you want to jump a chapter, just tap on the navigation controls on thecontrol panel or tap on the chapter pop up button to see thelist of available chapters. now because there is no screen cursor or pointeron the ipad, it can be quite difficult to follow the onscreenactions. so what i've done is to animate my taps. sowhenever i tap the screen,
in most cases you'll see a small yellow dot. that should hopefully draw your attention to the area of the screen where i tap. and also i'll explain exactly what i'm tapping and where the location of the button is. also, i've included some small red arrows thatwill again assist you in identifying the areas of the screenthat i'm talking about. let's start with a quick overview of some of thephysical ipad controls, and then i'll show you the basics of using theipad.
most of the physical ipad controls are positionedaround the edge of the ipad with just a single home button on the face, or bezel, of the ipad down at the bottom. and on the top bezel is the forward facing camera. on the top left corner of the ipad is theearphone or headphone jack. it's a standard three and a half mm audio jacksuitable for most headphones. you may need to press your headphone jack in quite firmly, especially on a new ipad. if you have an ipad with 3g connectivity, yours will have a black panel across the top of the ipad
as well as a small slot at the top left hand sidefor the 3g sim card. at the top right is the power button. just press the button once to put the ipad tosleep or to wake it up. to completely power down the ipad, press and holdthe power button for a few seconds until a slider appears and thenslide the slider. you don't need to power down the ipad very often. as it's got a great battery life and will last upto 10 hours. on the top right hand side are two switches. at the very top, the slide switch, and just belowthat a rocker switch.
by default the slide switch is set to mute thesound. so if i just slide it down, you'll see we get the symbol showing that the device has been muted. let me put it back up again. this particular switch can also be configured to lock the display on the ipad in either portrait mode or landscape, but we'll look at how to set that up later on. below the slide switch we have the volume controlwhich is a rocker control. we can either press the top to increase the sound
or press the bottom to decrease the sound. to mute all the sound, press and hold the bottom end of the rocker and you'll see it's mutedcompletely. let's press the top half and that will increasethe sound again. now at the bottom right is a speaker grill thatcontains the built in speaker. now you'll find that this is ok, but if you havea smart cover, when the smart cover is wrapped around the back of the ipad, it just boosts the speaker volume. and then finally at the bottom is the standard 30pin connector that
allows you to connect your ipad to your computerand other peripherals. so now that we've had a look at the physical make up of the ipad, let's have a look at managingyour home screen. when you first install your ipad, you'll bepresented with the home screen. but by default you just have a single page ofapplications. but over time you'll collect many apps byinstalling them from the app store. and they can spread over several pages. but let's start with the very top of the screen. we have a translucent black bar that stretches
right across the top of the screen. now on the left hand side, currently it saysipad. if i had a 3g ipad with connection to the 3gnetwork, you probably would see the carrier name there. and you'll also see the number of bars indicating the strength of the 3g signal. i'm currently on wifi, so i just see ipad and then the wifi signal showing that i've connected to awifi signal. in the middle is the time and then on the right
hand side we have a battery percentage. and the battery is currently at 67 percentcharged. now you might see additional icons if you switch on things likebluetooth. but as it stands, this is just the basic statusbar at the top of the ipad. we have the icons and then down at the bottom wehave the dock. and currently there are four icons in the dock. there's safari, which is the mobile browser, there's a mail icon, the photos application, andmusic. the dock is really a place to keep your most usedicons because when
you do have multiple pages, the dock will appearon every page. just above the dock there's two tiny icons. one is a magnifying glass, indicating the searchpage. and just a single dot, which indicates the singlepage of icons. to get to the search page, that's over to theleft. so if i swipe the icons across to the right, you see we move across to the page on the left. to get back to my home page, i just swipe with a single finger to the left and it takes me back tomy home icons.
if i try and swipe further, so if i swipe to the left, you'll see that the icons just bounce back. there isn't a second page, so i can't sweep along. now when we do add a new page of icons in or a new page, we'll see a second dot appear just abovethe dock. ok, let's show you how to reorder the icons onyour home screen. now we have to go into what's called a jigglemode. the way you do that is just tap and hold on anyicon. so i'm tapping on the facetime icon.
and let go and you'll see the icons have startedto move. now while they're in this state, which i call jiggle mode, you can rearrange them. so if i wanted to move the facetime icon to another row, i can just drag with my finger andlet go. if i wanted to move the itunes icon, again, justgrab and hold with my finger or tap and hold, rather, and just move itto where you want to place it. you can move icons to the dock. we've currently got four icons in the dock, butyou can have up to six.
what i would recommend is if you move thesettings icon, because we use this quite a lot down to the dock, let go, andthere it is in place for us. if i wanted to move my mail icon across to the left, i just pick up the mail icon with a single finger, drag and drop. let's say i wanted to move my game center icon. tap and hold, drag across to the right, and you'll see those icons zoom out of the way, let go. right, and there's my first icon on this nextpage.
swipe across and back to the home page. now as well as reorganizing the icons by placingthem on different pages or changing the order, you can also createfolders. very simple. all we do is to drag one icon on top of another. so for instance, if i wanted to create a folderof apple applications, i've got my app store, i've got my itunesapplications here. if i tap on itunes, you'll see we get the icon highlighted. drag it across to the app store. and then let go. right, that is now a new folder.
it's called lifestyle. but what i will do is i'll tap into the title, hit the backspace key, andthen just type apple. and say done. and to come out of the folder, just tap on thedesktop. we're still in jiggle mode as i call it. to come out of jiggle mode, just press the home button and the icon remains static. so now if i tap on the apple folder, you'll see we get direct access to those icons.
and i can create folders from any group of applications. i can even move folders through tothe docks. so tap and hold my apple folder, drag it down tothe dock, and let go. press the home button and that's them all rearranged. to remove icons from folders and also to removefolders is very simple. all you need to do, well, let's delete this applefolder. if i just tap and hold it in the dock, you go into jiggle mode, drag it out of the dock, and tap itonce. and that exposes the content of the folder.
let's remove the itunes icon from the folder. so again, tap and hold, drag it out and let go. so we just have the one icon in the folder. tap it once again to open the folder. to delete the folder, if we just drag the last remaining icon, drop it on the desktop, and the folder disappears. tap the home button, and that's it, gone. we'll look at this jiggle mode again later when we
look at deleting applications. these default applications we can't delete, we can only move them around on the home screen. but once i install some additional applications, i'll show you how you can delete them from youripad. ok, so let's take a look now at personalizingyour ipad. now the first thing that people tend to want to do with the ipad is to personalize your wallpaper. so to do that you need to go into settings.
don't forget i've dragged my settings icon down to the dock, so i can justtap on settings. and the option you want is brightness andwallpaper. all the various settings are down the side in thesidebar. and when you tap one of these settings, normallythe panel to the right changes to reflect the option that you've chosen. so if you go on brightness and wallpaper, here we have a brightness control at the top. and we have wallpaper.
so if i just tap on the main wallpaper section, now this gives you a selection of built in wallpapers. you can use your own photos once you've gotphotos onto the ipad, but we'll just use the standard wallpapers assupplied. let's choose the earth. so i'll tap on the earth. now two options. we have the lock screen. now that's the screen when the ipad is locked. and we have also the home screen. so you can either set either or both.
so if i want to have separate wallpaper for mylock screen, i just tap set lock screen. if i want this just to be on my home screen, justtap set home screen. in fact, let's use this one as the lock screen. ok, and let's choose another one for home screen. so if i tap on the landscape, let's say set homescreen. ok, that's done. to come out i just click on the home button. and there's my home screen wallpaper. now to come out if i just hit the power buttononce, and then hit it again.
right, there's my lock screen with the earth. slide to go back in and there's my separatewallpaper for my home screen. now let's reset that back as it was. so again into settings. it's remembered i had brightness and wallpaperset, so if i just tap into the main panel. and let's set it back to this sort of raineffect, or water effect. and i use this for both the lock screen and thehome screen. so tap set both. ok. and again, tap the home screen, takes us back outto as we were before.
now one other option that sometimes drives people to distraction are the sounds. by default you have keyboard clicks. so when you type on a keyboard it clicks back toyou. and you can take those off if you want. so back into settings, this time into general. and then within general we have an option forsounds. and then at the bottom keyboard clicks. and we'll take that off.
so i just tap the small slide switch at thebottom, and that switches it to off. there are lock sounds as well for when you lockyour machine. i tend to prefer leaving those on. and then there are all these other differenttones for ring tone, text tone, when a new mail arrives, when you send mail. and you can change these to your heart's contentreally. you can configure all the sounds to your ownpersonal preferences. one important consideration with your ipad issecurity.
this isn't too bad if you're at home. but again, if you do have young children around it might be useful to set a lock on your ipad. but more importantly, if you're out and about, you really do need to set what's called pass code so that anybody can'tjust pick up your ipad and get access to your email, etc. to set your pass code lock. and there are two things you need to consider, but let's have a look. we'll go back to general.
we'll tap the general button at the top. there are two things to consider. first is the auto lock setting. auto lock is when the ipad will lock itselfautomatically. now by default it's set for two minutes. so after two minutes of inactivity, the ipad will lockitself. and then if you have the pass code lock on, you'll need to enter a pass code to get in. so this doesn't interrupt our demonstration, i'm
going to set the auto lock to slightly longer, say 10 minutes. we'll go back to general and then we'll go intopass code lock. ok, currently it's off, so i need to turn it on. so tap on turn pass code on. and then we set a pass code. a simple pass code which are four numerics, orthere's complex pass code if you want to make it a bit more complexand harder to crack. so i'm just going to go ahead with one, two, three, four. and reenter one, two, three, four.
ok. and that is my pass code. as well as the auto lock, there's also the optionto require a pass code either immediately or after a minute, after five minutes, after 50 minutes. so if you set your auto lock to a short duration, say to conserve battery life, and you don't really want your pass codes toappear each time it auto locks, you can change the timeout for the password to be a lot longer.
so say every four hours while you're at home. so if it does auto lock, you're not consistently always having to enter the pass code. but i'll leave it set to immediately for now. we'll come back out. let's test it. so if i again just lightly press the power keyonce and then again. so there's our lock screen. slide to unlock. and now i need to enter my passcode. one, two, three, four.
now we're in. let's go back into pass code lock. i have to enter the pass code to change mysettings one, two, three, four. now i can switch on a complex password. so if i tap where it says simple pass code and switch that off, enter my old pass code. and enter a new password. we have the full keyboard now. so i can enter any combination of upper casecharacters and numeric as well. i'm just going to go ahead though and call this
password, which you never ever use, of course. ok, and then i'll hit return. and reenter. now press done on the dialogue box. ok. so now if i test this by powering down andpowering up using the power button slide, right, we now get the full keyboard to enter our complexpassword. ok, so that's entered. type return. we're back in. just one other thing about pass code lock. we go back into the section, again enter my
password or pass code to get back in. i'll tap return on the keyboard this time. there's the option to switch on a picture frame. and again, we can't really see that until we havesome photos on our ipad. picture frame is like a digital photo book, sothat when you have your ipad off and it's in its lock screen, you canconfigure it so that it will display some of the photos that arecontained on the ipad. finally, for pass code lock, see at the bottomerase data currently set to off. if you set that on, if someone accessesyour ipad and then
tries to bypass the pass code 10 times, it will erase the data on your machine. but what i'm going to do now, i'm going to switch the pass code off while i'm demonstrating. so we'll turn pass code off. just need to enter it one more time. it will saydone. ok, and that's now off. back into general. in fact, i'll change my auto lock to never so that it doesn't interrupt us while we're demonstrating.
so that's setting a pass code on your ipad. you've already seen me use the home button tonavigate around the ipad. and the home button being the single physical button on the front of the ipad on the lowerbezel. but it's worth investing some time in learningdifferent ways to use the home button, and also to use a thing calledmulti-touch gestures. and i'll explain what they are shortly. but let's just focus in on the home button now because there are several different ways you can
use a home button. so this is the home page. if i wanted to get to the search page, i couldjust swipe to the right or just do a single tap on thehome button. and that takes me straight to my search page. if i do another single tap, the home button takesme back to my home page. if i go to the next page of icons, remember, imoved the game center over here. and if i tap the home button once, it takes meback to my home page. so just to recap, from the home page a single tap
will take me to the search page. from any other page but the home page, single tap will take you back to the home page. ok, let's run an application. let me run the youtube application. i just tap onyoutube. to return to the home page from any application, again, a single tap of the home button takes meback. one thing to note that although i've come out of the youtube application, i haven't closed it down.
it's still running in the background. let me run a second application, let's say thenotes application. ok, that's notes. so if i want to get back to the home screen, just a single tap on the home button takes me back there. so now i have two applications running in thebackground. i have my youtube application and my notesapplication. how do i get back to them? well, i could just tap on the icons from the homescreen, but there are
some better ways, some quicker ways to get tothem. the first off is to use the multitasking bar. that's a bar that's hidden at the moment. but the way you can bring it up into view, well, there are two ways. one way is to double tap on the home button. soif i just tap twice, one, two, you'll see from the bottom of the screen thewhole page of icons that rise up and then there are my two running applications. if i wanted to run my youtube application, i just tap on youtube and that brings it to theforefront.
let me go back to the home page again with just a single tap of the home button. again, it's still running in the background. another way to get to our multitasking bar to access the running applications is to usemulti-touch gestures. these are similar to the gestures that you can use on the track pad on a mac if you're running lion. but the first one i'll show you is the fourfinger swipe up. so if i just place four fingers on my home page or on any
page of icons really and then just push up. you'll see that the multitasking bar appears downat the bottom. if you're on an ipad 1, you'll need to go into the settings application to switch multitaskinggestures on. in fact, let me do that for you. i'll use a four finger swipe down to come out of the multitasking bar. let's go into settings. and then if i just scroll up with a singlefinger, there we go. multitasking gestures. it's switched on bydefault on ipad 2 and above,
but on the original ipad you do need to switchthat on. and this only works with ios5. let's come out ofthe settings application. again, i could just press the home key. another way to do it is, again, another multi-touch gesture. and that's a pinch gesture. if i use all fivefingers, place them on the screen, and then pinch inwards, you'll see we go back to the home screen. so four finger push up reveals the multitaskingbar. you'll see the settings application is now running in themultitasking bar as well.
while we're here let me just show you anothermulti-touch gesture. let me open the youtube application. so i'll just tap on the youtube icon. to switch between applications when you're in an application, you can use a four finger swipe. so if i do a four finger swipe to the left, there's my settings application that's running. let's doanother swipe. there we go, there's my notes application. if you imagine these as full screen applicationssort of in a row all
running side by side, i'm at the far right of therow of applications. if i try and scroll to the right by doing a four finger gesture to the left, you'll seenothing happens. there are no further applications running. and if i go the other way, a four finger swipe to the right, there's my settings application. and this is an application in its own right, so it's running separately in the multitasking bar. another swipe to the right with four fingers takes
me to the youtube application. and then a further swipe to the right, no furtherapplications running. to get back to the home screen, i can either press the home button or i can use the pinch gesture. so with all five fingers placed on the screen, pinch inwards and that takes us back to the homescreen. so just to recap, a four finger swipe up takes usto the multitasking bar. four finger swipe down closes the multitaskingbar. if you go into an application, you just go intoyoutube, a four finger
swipe to the left or right will show you the nextapplication. that's me just going through the three runningapplications. and then a five finger pinch gesture inwardstakes you as we saw in the previous section, if i do a fourfinger swipe up, we've got three applications running in ourmultitasking bar. four finger swipe down to hide it. there are no limits to the number of applications that will run in the background. in fact, most ofthem don't run. there's sort of like in a frozen state.
so you can use the multitasking bar to accessfrequently used applications. and it's really good if you have lots and lots ofpages of icons. so what i will do now is i'll just start loadingup on pretty much all the applications i have instore. so if i load calendar, the home button to go backto the home page. hit reminders. again, home button to go back tothe home page. let's go into maps. again, home button. let's run the contacts application, back to thehome button. news stand. actually, news stand is somethingseparate.
we'll look at news stand later. let's run itunes. back to the home page using the home button. and the app store. back to the home page. and what else? let's say safari. and back to thehome page. ok, so i basically started all those applicationsup. and if i now look at the multitasking bar, fourfinger swipe up, you'll see them all running in the background or all in a frozen state in the background. you can't see them all because some of them areoff to the right.
so if i do a single finger swipe across the multitasking bar from the right to the left, you'll see there's the other applications. so it's a neat way of accessing your recently runapplications. the ipad itself will manage the state of allthese applications. so unlike a sort of normal computer, you don'treally need to go into delete them from the multitasking bar to stopthem from running. the only exception to this in my experience, notso much on the ipad but on the iphone are apps that use gps ornavigation.
these do tend to use up the battery. so i do find it's useful to delete them from themultitasking bar and stop them running manually once you've finishedusing the application. to manually close an app, say i wanted to closedown the maps application. all i do is tap and hold. and there we go into jiggle mode and we get the little minus button in the top left hand of eachicon. if i just tap that minus button on the maps icon, it deletes it from the multitasking bar.
so that's the way to clear up your multitaskingbar, but after several days usage you'll find you have lots and lots ofapplications in there. don't really need to worry about them too much. all your most recently accessed applications willbe towards the left hand side of your multitasking bar. but to comeout of the jiggle mode, why just tap away. takes us back to the homescreen. four finger swipe up and there we are. and i can just scroll left and right to access my running or frozen applications.
there are instances of course where you don't want an application to be frozen. you want it to carry on working in thebackground, such as the music player. if you've loaded a music track you want it tocarry on playing even if it's in background mode. ios can do that, and your ipad can do that. let's demonstrate by loading the musicapplication. so four finger swipe down. there's my music application in the dock.
single tap will load it. i've got the volumeturned down. there's a volume slide. and we'll look at the music application separately later. but there's a volume slider. now let me bring it up slightly so you can hearthe music across the microphone. select this jeff smith. and the first track. ok, so that's sort of playing in the backgroundi'll turn the volume down so it doesn't interfere with the microphone.
and now if i double tap on the home button, we'll see it takes us to our multitasking bar. the music application itself doesn't appearbecause it's still to the forefront. i've not put it inbackground mode. so four finger swipe down. let's go to anotherapplication. i'll do a pinch gesture to go back to the homescreen. and if i turn up the sound using the rockerswitch. ok, so the music is still playing. so we can now go into safari, say, browse the web
and still have the music on in the background. let me just go back into the multitasking bar. there's our music application. there's a set of hidden controls which somepeople miss completely. and those hidden controls are available by swiping right on the multitasking bar. and that gives us some media playback controls. now you'll see that the music icon in the corner indicates that it's the music application that's
playing. i've got the track label. i wanna dance down at the bottom. i've got aset of playback controls. i can pause and stop. i've also got a volumecontrol. so again, i can alter the volume from here. and we'll turn it down again. i can pause. i can play. ok, so i can control from here. there's also a brightness control. so i can alterthe brightness. now because of the way i'm recording this screen cast, you can't see the brightness on screen.
but that's the brightness control. the other button next to the button playbackcontrols is airplay. but we'll look at that separately. and the other button on here is on the far lefthand side. if you watch where it says, i wanna dance, when i tap this button, see, it says landscapeorientation locked. so this is the lock to lock your ipad into eitherportrait or landscape mode. if i rotate the device, it will stay locked in landscape. tap it again to release it.
to be honest, it's a useful feature but it's a bit hidden away in this particular menu. and it's a bit awkward to get to that. so what i prefer to do is to have the orientationlock on the side switch. the physical switch on the side just above thevolume control. to do that, what you have to do is you have to go into settings to change that. so let me go into settings. so four finger down, that takes me back to safari. i can do a pinch to take me backto the home screen.
go into settings. and you'll see down at the bottom of the generalsection is use side switch to either lock rotation or tomute. by default, it's set to mute. i'm going to selectlock rotation. ok, so now if we go back into the multitaskingbar. so four finger swipe up, scroll across to theright. and you'll see that the icon has now changed to amute icon. so if i physically change the side switch, you'll see we get the orientation lock, on andoff.
and then if i select this button here, it mutesthe volume. i found that to be a much better arrangement. so if you do make this change, it's sometimesworth checking this icon. sometimes you forget that it's there and you might find that your machine doesn't have any volume. just go into the multitasking bar, swipe to the right, and just check that the icon isn't set to mute like that. i'll switch it off. of course one of the major benefits of using anipad
is the availability of thousands of differentapplications, all available in the app store. so let's go ahead and show you how to install anddelete applications that you install from the app store. so if i just tap on the app store icon. the first time i enter the app store, i'm prompted to download a free copy of ibooks. this is the ebook reader that apple supplied forthe ipad. and i'm going to go ahead and say yes.
so we'll tap on download. right, now it'sprompting me for my apple id password. this is the apple id that i set up for icloud. you can use this apple id, but i already have an apple id that i've used on other mac devices. and i've already bought a whole load ofapplications. so i don't really want to buy them again by usinga different apple id, so i'm going to go in and log in using myexisting apple id so i can get access to all the different applications thati've already purchased.
if i do want to use the apple id i set up foricloud, if i was to enter my password and tap ok, i will be invited toenter my credit card details again. but as i say, i don't really wantto use my icloud apple id, i want to use my existing apple id. that i've already purchased apps on another device. so i'm going to say cancel to that. and to log in as a different user, i'm going toscroll down to the bottom. see, i'm currently logged in as apple id scotutor3@me.com. i'm going to tap that.
i'm going to say sign out and say sign in. and i'm going to use an existing apple id. ok, so now i can put in my old existing apple idand my old password. so let me just enter those. right, and that's me now logged in, able topurchase and install applications. and also download applications i've previouslypurchased. let's go ahead and download an ibook application. if i go into search, i'll tap at the top, ibook. right, there's my player. for the ipad, it'sfree.
so i'm going to tap on free and then install app. ok. i then get a prompt to enter edit the homescreen, we'll say dismiss. and there's my ibooks installing. it's installing on the second page of icons thati've set, but that's fine. well, that's installed. and let's go back to theapp store. so, four finger swipe up, tap on app store, and let's go back to the feature page by tappingon the icon at the bottom. let's take a quick look around the app store. there's a few things to point out.
across the top you have some tabs, so the new tabis the one by default. this is all the new applications that arecurrently available. they are sorted into various categories as well, but we'll look at those. there's a what's hot, the latest hotapplications. and also you can have a look at buy release datesas well. but let's go back to new. top panel. these are only special offers. they're normally groups of applications puttogether. so party planner, if i tap on that, takes me to a
page all connected with party planning. but let's go back to the app store. new andnoteworthy. let me just scroll down slightly. so you can see the six applications in new and noteworthy. there are also four dots underneath that. this isa scrollable panel. i can scroll through and have a look at the fourdifferent separate panels just by scrolling left or right using asingle finger. if we look at this gangster rio city of saints, you'll see it's currently on sale for ₤4.99 and there's a littleplus in the label.
that plus indicates that it's available for bothiphone and ipad. so you purchase it once and then the application you can also download to your iphone as well oryour ipad. and they optimized for both, it's what's calledthe universal application. you can run iphone applications on your ipad butthey sort of get blown up twice the size, so it's not really that greatan experience. so if you can find applications that are optimized for both ipad and iphone, they're normally thebest ones to go for. and you will find that there are someapplications that are just ipad only.
they're normally represented by, well, not having the plus in the little label. so there's priced applications, there are alsofree applications. so you'll see the one next to it, paper pot notesis free. if i scroll to the next panel, you'll see here, yeah, here we go. wall of sound. this is an application i'vepurchased before, or it might be a free application that i've downloadedbefore. well, you'll see it says install. so because i'm logged on with an existing appleid that i have used to
purchase this application before, it's allowingme just to reinstall it without showing me the price, whether it's freeor not. i can just install that application. the next panel down, normally again featured types of applications or specific applications. and then there's an option for staff favorites. just scroll down a bit further again. this is ascrollable panel again. oops. let's move that back up. this is ascrollable panel, so i can just use my single finger just toswipe through.
there's another really good application, flipboard. that's a free application. let me just install flipboard because that is asuper application and i would recommend that you get this. it's sort oflike a news reader. and what it does it allows you to read all sortsof content from all sorts of different sources in a really niceapplication. so let me go ahead and install flipboard. ok, so that's flipboard installing. let's go back to the app store while it does.
so these are staff favorites. you can see all ifyou want. tap once to see all. you can see all the stafffavorites. or back again to the app store and then downright at the bottom we've got links to previous apps of the week, previousgames, free apps, game centers at school and iwork. also three buttons, your apple id we you can sign in or sign out using a specific apple id. theoption to redeem. so if you have a coupon code or a giftcertificate, you can go in and redeem from that button.
and then an option to access the apple supportsite. but scroll back up to the top. and also down across the bottom we have featured, which we're currently on. we have the option to switch onwhat's called the genius. so if we turn on genius, what it will do is itwill go ahead - there's some terms and conditions we have to agree to. so again, i suggest you readthat. although there are 38 pages. let me go ahead andagree. now what it will do is it will go ahead and itwill work out based on
what you've already purchased, it will give yousome recommendations for additional applications that you might beinterested in. so you'll see here, based on spot remote which isa spotify remote application that i've purchased. there's another spotify remote application calledremoteless. i've downloaded the 360 panorama application, which is a camera application for my iphone. it's recommending this dip tick, which is anothertype of camera phone. but have a play with genius, it's quite a goodidea.
and it's a good way of finding new applications. let's go to top charts, tap down at the bottom. so top paid ipad applications and top free ipadapplications. again, these are scrollable panels, so you canscroll up and downwards. various categories, so if you want to search fora specific category you can choose a category from this particularscreen. so photo and video. takes us straight to photoand video. you can have a look at your purchasedapplications. so again, because i'm using an existing apple id,
these are all the applications that i've alreadypurchased. and if i want to download them, all i need to dois to tap on the individual cloud icon next to each applicationand that will download that direct to my ipad. if you want moreinformation about an application, so for instance this jimi hendrix. if i just tap on jimi hendrix, that will open upto a full page which gives me more information about the application. and this is the same for allapplications. each application has a specific page to give youmore information.
so a side bar with an install button, some details about the category, who the developer is, etc. buttons to go to the developer website and to appsupport. and then on the main page, you've got options to, again, visit the developer page, to tell a friend. there's also some information which you can access by tapping the them and it will give you moreinformation. and there's some screen shots. and these screen shots you can just scroll through
to have a look at what it looks like. it's also possible to rate and read customerreviews from these pages also. let's go back to my purchase tab and the last tab across the bottom is updates. so if there are any updates to your applicationsthat you've installed, you can tap on the updates button and that willgive you a list of all the applications. and the ability to either update individual appsor update them all. so that's the app store. let's come out.
what i will show you now that we have installedthese applications, just for purposes of demonstration, i'll deletethe flipboard application. i would suggest that you go back in andredownload it if you do. but just to show you how to delete anapplication, tap and hold. and you'll see that these installed applications from the app store have these little black xsnext to them. whereas the game center, which is a default application installed with the ipad, doesn't. so what we can do is just tap on the x, delete
flipboard and all its contents, all its data.we'll say delete, and that's gone. tap on the home button and those xsdisappear. so very, very easy to install applications fromthe app store. and if you don't like them, it's very, very easyto delete them from your ipad. before we move away from applications, there isone additional third party application you might wantto install. that's because now ios5 has full integration withtwitter. so if either you're an existing twitter user oryou'd like to start using twitter, ios has been developed tointegrate fully with twitter
so that you can do such things as tweet messages. you can tweet photos directly from the photoapplication. quite a bit of integration. but to set up theintegration with twitter, what we need to do is go into settings. so from the dock i'll just tap on the settingsicon. and you'll see down in the sidebar we havetwitter. so if i tap on twitter, we can install theapplication from here. we can add our existing username and password, orwe can create a new account. let me go ahead and create a new account.
let's give it my full name. in fact, let's callmyself sco tutor. so that's going to be sco tutor. email, i'll use my cloud email id.scotutor3@me.com. user name, scotutor3. and password. retype thepassword. find me by email. so people can search for my email address. i'llleave that as on. tweet location. i'll leave that off for now. you can imbed geo-information. so that because your ipad has got gpscapabilities
it knows where you are. you can imbed yourlocation within your tweet. i'm going to leave that off for now. and i'mgoing to say sign up. ok, would we like to install the free twitterapp? we'll say install. and that's twitter nowinstalled. if you're a big facebook user, you can alsoinstall facebook. that's another third party application. to do that, what you need to do is go to the appstore. still in the updates panel i go to featured, tap on the search panel. click on the x to clear the search panel.
and just type facebook. tap on facebook. andthere we go. they have a specific ipad app now so i just tapinstall. ok. and that's facebook installing. when you want to access facebook when you tap that icon, you'll be prompted for your log in, youruser details, etc. but that's how you install twitter and facebookon your ipad. now this is just a very quick tip that can saveyou lots of time, especially after a while when you literally caninstall hundreds of applications on your ipad.
we've seen how to reorganize the icons on thehome screen. we've also seen how to create folders. but no matter how organized you are, you do endup forgetting where you've installed applications, on which page theyare. now in this case it's quite easy because there's just two pages and i can see all my icons. but after six months or so, you'll probably end up with three or four, if not more, pages full oficons. and it's sometimes difficult to track down theicon that you want.
so a quick tip is, say i couldn't find myfacebook icon. it was somewhere else on another screen. to search for it, just go to the search page. again, i could swipe, but i could be five or sixpages across to the right of my search page, which is to the left ofmy home page. so all i need to do is press the home button once, that takes me to my home page. press the home button again and it takes me tosearch. and then just start typing. so facebook, facebook.
i can see that i've got facebook. i've also gotfacetime. but if i want facebook, i can just tap the entry and that will take me straight there. you'll notice you can also use this searchfacility to search the web. so if i backspace over facebook and this time ifi search for, say, screencastsonline, there's nothing on my ipad todo with screencastsonline. but i can finish my search of the web or searchwikipedia. let's go ahead and search the web. now we'll load up mobile safari and immediately do
a search for screencastsonline. tap the entry andthen you're in. now to get back to the search page, tap the homebutton once. it takes you back to the home page. tap the home button again, it takes you to thesearch panel. you can find lots of things on your ipad usingthe search page. i just tapped clear the search entry. let's say i wanted to search my music, search forthomas dolby, dolby. there's all my music. music video and options to search the web orwikipedia.
now to configure what appears within your search results and in what order, as usual, we go intosettings. and then under general, there's an option to do a spotlight search, so we'll tap on there. so there are all the categories that will appearin my search, and also we can re-order them by grabbing on one of thehandles at the side of each category and rearranging it in a list. so search is a really useful feature on the ipad. for more information about installingapplications on your ipad or on
your mac or on your iphone, indeed, go across toscreencastsonline.com, and check out the membership details. in the new year, i'll be doing a whole load of new screencasts all about ipad and iphone appsspecifically. so go ahead and check out screencastsonline.comand find out about becoming a member to access theweekly tutorials. [music] ios5 now comes with a robust notification service so that you don't miss any alerts from yourapplications.
now these notifications are highly configurable,so you can easily control exactly how you want them to appear andwhen. now there's a new facility in the ipad called the"notification center." so to see notifications, while we're on the homescreen, if i just swipe down from the top, you'll see we get thispanel pop up. and currently there are no new notifications. now we can configure them to appear within thisnotification center. we can configure them to appear at the top of the screen or even in the lock screen.
but let's start off by -- i'll send somenotifications to my ipad. i'll use that twitter account. i'll send myself a message from twitter to thescotutor3 twitter account. now the first thing we need to do is run twitter for the first time, so let me just run thetwitter application. twitter would like access to twitter accounts.we'll say, "ok." and twitter would like to send you pushnotifications. i'm going to say "ok" in this instance. normallyi like to control them, so normally i say "don't allow" and thenconfigure them manually,
but i'll just say "ok" to accept the defaults. so there we go -- scotutor3 -- you're now ontwitter. follow your friends. you can tap that and what it will do is will gothrough and check your contacts list to see if there are any people thathave already given you their twitter handle. but we haven't set up our contacts yet, so at themoment it's just giving us what looks like to be a whole load ofcelebrities. so i won't follow any of those. we'll just say"next."
right, i can update my profile photo. so i can take a photo using the built-in camera of the ipad or choose an existing photo. again, i'm not going to bother doing that. i'lljust say "finish." twitter would like to use your current location. i'll say "don't allow" in this instance. i'm not following anyone in twitter yet. in fact, let's follow my own account. let's search for a name. search for donmcallister. we'll tap on "@donmcallister." ok, and there i am.
so, let me follow myself. tap on "follow." we're following. ok, let's tap on"screencastsonline" as well. ok, and let's say "cancel" and "skip" and therewe go. so there are the tweets that i've sent recently, and as chance would have it, there's my 30,000thtweet up at the top. ok, so what i'm going to do now is going to comeout of twitter. what i've done is to go across to twitter on another machine -- this time on my mac. i've followed scotutor3 on my other twitteraccount, so when i send the
direct message from twitter on the other machine,it should appear on this ipad as a notification. so, i can reach the other machine from here, solet's say "send." virtually instantaneously, we get this message. ican tap on that. that takes me directly to the message. let's comeback out. let's tap once to come out to the home screen. swipe down. right, no new notifications. let me send another message, and this time i'lllet the banner disappear and we'll have update in thenotifications panel.
ok, so i'll just send another direct messageacross to scotutor3. message from don mcallister. this dm should appear in the notifications panel. now i won't touch that, now. and it disappearsautomatically. now there's a badge indicator on the twitter icon showing me that there is one message. if i swipe down from the top ... there we go. there is my twitter message from don mcallister. if i tap that -- take me straight into twitter as
well, and there's my new message. ok, back to thehome screen. swipe down, and no new notifications. now there's tons and tons of applications thatwill support this notification system. to configure it, what you need to do is go intosettings. so, let me just go back into settings. ok, we're still on our twitter configuration page. if i go to notifications, which you should see inthe side panel. there we are -- notifications.
ok, so, swipe down from the top of the screen to view the notification center rather than panel. you can sort the applications manually or by time. let's select "by time," so we'll have them sortedwhen the alerts come in. and these are all the different applications currently configured for the notification center. so facetime, messages, reminders, calendar, gamecenter, and twitter. so let's have a look at the twitter configuration. so, any notifications from twitter, any alerts,
will go into the notification center. show thefive most recent items. you can change that if you want more. the alert style -- so, currently it's set tobanner. so we saw that rotating banner -- that's thecentral one. we can switch those off if we want. we just want them to appear in the notification center, we can switch the alert style to non. or if we want the alerts to be presented to usfull screen with a dialogue to say "ok" or "cancel," we can selectthis option here.
i'm going to leave it as banners. the option to have the badge app icon -- that'sthe little "1" that appeared before when we had onemessage. sounds -- take on or off. and then view in lockedscreen. so we can still view the notification center even when the ipad is locked, and i've got that on. ok, let's just go back and that's the same configuration for all these differentapplications. and you can see how they are configured by thetitle.
so, just underneath the title, facetime isconfigured for badges and alerts, messages for badges and banners, etc. now you'll notice that mail isn't in notificationcenter. if you get lots of mail, perhaps you don't want them to appear in the notification center itself. to show you the notifications with multipleentries, i've stopped the recording and just sent another tweet message andalso sent what's called an "imessage." and we'll look at imessagelater. but you can see on my home page, i have a singlebadge icon on the
messages application showing that there's amessage there. if i scroll across to my other page, there's mytwitter message as well, but if i scroll down from the top, you'llsee there is my twitter message, and then there is also my imessage thati sent from my iphone. now to clear these messages, you just tap on the"x," and then say "clear." and again, for twitter, tap on the "x," and say"clear." and then just swipe up to close the notificationpanel. so that's notifications on ios5 and the ipad. in this section, we're going to take a look atcreating text and
using the keyboard. now the tricks i'm going toshow you -- , i'm going to show you in the notes application. in fact, let me open the notes application. everything i show you to do with text and the keyboard -- really is system wide. it's not justthis one application. so the tricks and tips you learn in this sectionyou can apply across all your different applications -- wherever youneed to enter any text. so this is the notes applications. now by default it's opened a new note for me, so
i'm just going to start typing. so, first thing to do is i'm going to just tapinto the note itself, and that brings up the keyboard. let me just type a line in. ok, this is a newnote. you'll notice in the sidebar that we have thecurrent note highlighted with the red swirl around it, and it's taken thefirst line of the note to act as the note title. ok, what i'm going to do now is just tap twospaces. a couple of things to notice.
first off, i tapped two spaces, but it's put afull stop and a space. and also you'll notice that the shift key on thekeyboard, which is the one just on the left and the right hand side, just one row up, has turned to, like, a blue outline. that just indicates that when i next start typing, it will capitalize the next sentence for me. so, that's two things that are switched on bydefault. one is the insertion of a period and a space whenyou tap two spaces. and the second one is auto-capitalization.
so this is another sentence. two spaces, and that's the period and a spacebetween. now you'll notice that sentence is underlined inred. that's a spelling mistake. so let me just tap and hold on the -- type select. and then you'll see we can cut, we can copy, orwe can suggest. let me just suggest for now. "sentence" -- so it should be t-e-n, rather thant-a-n. so we'll tap "sentence." right, and that'sreplaced it for us.
you probably noticed as i was typing as well that there were some auto-suggestions coming up as ityped. let's have a look at that in a bit more detail. now what i want to do now is to position mycursor at the end of the line. so, to do that, all i need to do is just tap andhold, and we get this loop. and that can move the insertion point anywhere onthat sentence. so if i put it there -- ok, that's fine. rather than select, select or select all, i'mjust going to hit return. and that gives me a new line and another return.
let's type something else. so this is "auto" -- no, it's come up with asuggestion of "auto-complete." if i want that, i can just tap space, and thatwill pop it in for me. but if i wanted "auto-completion," -- let me justbackspace, using the key at the top -- it's put back what i typed, soi'm just going to hit that, so now i can just finish off saying "auto-completion." now it's saying "auto-complete" on. i don't want that, so i just tap on the "x" andget rid of it. two taps and there's my period and a space.
to delete text, i just hit the backspace key. i can just do it once at a time, or i can tap andhold down, and then it will take off characters and then it will take out entire words andsentences. now copy and paste is really easy. i've justtyped some extra text in. let's say i wanted to move things around. so, if i wanted to -- let's say -- well, thatthird line. this should really be the second line. i want to move that, so all i need to do is tapand hold.
i can tap anywhere on that line and let go. and i get the option to select or select all. if i do a select all, you'll see it selects theentire body of text. i didn't really want to do that, so again, if itap and hold, and just type "select," now i get thesetwo markers. what i can do is i can grab this end one, move itto the end of the sentence. grab the second one, and then, just with myfinger, drag it to the beginning. i can either copy it or i can cut. let's say i want to cut, because i want to moveit.
tap just below the first line. let's put anotherreturn in. and then tap again, and say "paste." and that moves the text that i've just cut afterthe selection. you don't have to do it for full lines. you can do it for partial lines. you can do itfor individual words. just move those markers around to select the textthat you want, and then you can use the cut or copy command to makea copy or to cut it from the text itself. tap once more, and thenpaste. just another tip about typing.
if i go down to the bottom here, if i wanted totype all uppercase, if i tap twice on the shift key, we get this fullyhighlighted blue shift key, and now this should be all in caps. tap again, and it's out of caps. do anotherreturn. as far as the keyboard is concerned, there's some special tricks you can do with the keyboard. first being the support for internationalcharacters. these characters that have these diacriticmarkings above them. for instance, in "exposã©" or in "cafã©," it shouldreally be a special "e."
it should have this little diacritic character ormarking above the "e." so if i type "exposã©," right, it's either goingto auto-correct it for us, and i can just hit space, and that will popit in. or, if i wanted to make my selection, i justbackspace over the "e," and then on the keyboard, if i tap and hold the"e," we get this little pop up panel of the different characters, and ican just slide my finger across, decide which one i want -- let'ssay that one -- let go, and that's put in position for me. ok, "cafã©," c-a-f -- again, instead of typing the"e," i'll tap and
hold the "e," and again, i can just slide myfinger to the "e" that i want. ok, another thing -- currency. so, if i go to my currency keys -- if i tap onthe big key on the bottom left hand side of the keyboard, you cansee i have a pound sign. this is a british keyboard, so if i wanted to putdollars -- i mean, i can just type pounds, but if i now wanted to typedollars, again, just put some spaces in, tap and hold the pound sign, and there are lots of different currency symbols i can use. the dollar sign is already highlighted, so all i
need to do is let go of the key, and the dollarsign is put in. a similar thing for quotes. if i type and hold the quotes key, differenttypes of smart quotes. and you'll find by experimentation, lots of keyshave these multiple functions. if you want to get to symbols, you just pressthis hash plus an equals key on the right hand side, and there are some additional symbols there aswell. ok, let's have a look at the keyboard itself, because you can do some special things with thekeyboard.
you can undock and split the keyboard -- which isgreat if you want to move the keyboard around the screen or if youwant to type with your thumbs, you can split the keyboard as well. to undock the keyboard or to split it, you justtap on the keyboard symbol down in the bottom righthand corner. tap and hold, and then move your finger to undocknow the keyboard is free. we can grab the keyboard symbol and move it aboveand below. tap and hold again, say dock, put it back in thesame position . to split the keyboard, tap and hold, selectsplit.
we now get this mini keyboard that we can noweasily access with our thumbs. to put it back as it was tap and hold the keyboard key, dock and merge, and there we go. here's another great tip which will speed up your typing and that's the ability to createabbreviations. if i go back to the abc keyboard, let's just puta couple of returns in, if i just type in omw you'll see it's poppingup with a suggestion of 'on my way'. hit return and that's pasted in. omw is a default abbreviation that's included with
the ipad but you can set your own up. the way we do that is to go to the settingsapplication. we're already in general. if i scroll down, here we go, keyboard. this isthe auto capitalization that we looked at, the auto correction, the checkspelling is on, the enable caps lock is on, and also our dot spaceshortcut is on. the option to split the keyboard. you can also include international keyboard if you want but here are the shortcuts.
omw is on my way. let's add a new shortcut. let'ssee. my business name is screencastsonline. i like to capitalize screencastsonline. it's going to be capital s, capital c, and capital o and the shortcut let's just have 'sco' and save. let's do that for my website as well. add a newshortcut. www.screencastsonline.com and my shortcut will be'sco web'. we'll save. the only limitation is you can't usemultiple lines. they have to be single lines or phrases but thoseare my two abbreviations.
to test that out let me go back to notes. forefinger swipe up. tap on notes. let's tap into the document. one return. if i just type sco, screencastsonline, return. pops it in for me. if i want my website addresssco web, www.screencastsonline.com, hit return and that'spasted in for me. throughout the tutorial i'll be making reference toicloud and i'm presuming that if you're watching this videoalready on an ipad you will have been through the setup routine andincluded in the new setup routine for ios5 is an option to create a freeicloud account.
an icloud account is a free service from applethat allows you to do a number of things. it gives you some free storage in the cloud, soon apple's servers, it gives you a free email address, and it also givesyou the ability to backup your ios device wirelessly into thecloud so you don't need to back it up to a pc or a mac. it's areally neat service. you can buy additional storage if you want butthe standard free account will probably be fine for most people andit gives you additional benefits as well.
for instance, if you have multiple ios devices, say an ipad and an iphone or an ipod touch, you can synchronizevarious things across seamlessly, such things as your browserbookmarks, your contacts, and even send application settings will betransferred automatically. it's especially good if you have a mac in thatyou can have an icloud account and synchronize all this informationbetween your ios devices and your mac. plus there's a new thing called photo streamwhich we'll look at in the photo section which allows you to seamlesslyupload your photos into icloud and then they will then be pushed downinto all your devices that
have your icloud account on. i'm presuming, as isay, if you set this up from scratch you probably already have an icloudaccount. if you haven't i would recommend that you get oneand this section is showing you how to set up a free icloud accounton your ipad. let's go into settings. under settings there isan icloud option. if you already have an icloud id, an apple id that'slinked to your icloud account, say, for instance, you're already a macuser and have an icloud account you can just enter your apple idinto here and enter your password as well and then sign in.
if you haven't i suggest you get a free apple id. let's just tap on 'get a free apple id' andselect 'our location'. i'm in the uk so i'll scroll down to the bottom, select united kingdom, enter my birthday. i'm going to say next. use an existing email address or get a free @me.com email address. i'm going to go ahead and get a free address. in the email section if i just tap into there we now need to enter our new apple id.
i've already been using an scotutor3@me.comaddress for the tutorial so i'm going to go ahead and create an additional one. scotutor4@me.com but in other modules you'll see the address as scotutor3. let's put in my name and then i need to enter apassword. it needs to be at least eight characters, includea number, an upper case letter, and a lower case letter. let's putthe keyboard out of the way. we need to enter a security question. if i tap onthere let's say favorite
teacher and for my answer let's say mr. jones andnext. all right. there are terms and conditions. thereare 18 pages. you can get it to send it to you by email if youwant by tapping on the link. i'll just say agree, having read all 18 pages. i agree to the terms of service and that willthen create the account for us. allow icloud to use the location of your ipad i'mgoing to say ok. this enables this great feature called find my ipadwhich enables you to see the location of your ipad on a map which isgreat for if you lose it, if you misplace it, or if it gets stolen.
you might still be able to retrieve it by looking at the 'find my ipad' feature. let's say ok. nowi have mail setup, i have contacts, calendars, reminders, bookmarks, notes. photo stream is currently switched off but we'll switch that one when we look at the photoapplication. documents and data enables me to synchronizedocuments on my ipad into the cloud so for any particular applications suchas iwork on ios that are configured for that i can do that and alsofind my ipad. storage and backup.
if i just go into storage and backup i have fivegigabytes of free storage of which five gigabytes is available ihave not used any storage uppers yet. i also have the option to do an icloud backup, currently sent to off. this feature allows you to backup your camera, your accounts, documents, and settings when your ipad isphysically plugged in, locked, and connected to wifi. i'm going to go ahead and switch that on and then tap ok to say start icloud backup. ok. that's it.
although it will backup automatically when youplug your ipad to recharge it you can manually override theautomatic backup just by tapping up on 'backup now'. we'll leave that for now but that's icloudconfigured so now you can benefit from all the free services that appleoffer to do with synchronization. again, if you're a lion user or a mac user ingeneral you can find out more information about using icloud over atscreencastsonline com or you can find additional apps in the mac and alsothe itunes app store.
now, with the ipad and ios5 you can use it completelyindependently from your pc or mac but if you do have a mac or a pcyou might want to synchronize your media or data that's containedon your mac using itunes. that's possible just simply by connecting theipad to itunes either via a usb cable, so physically connect it to your macor pc, or you can synchronize using wifi. this section i'm going to take you through how tosetup your ipad to synchronize with your pc or mac but if you don'thave a pc or mac you might want to skip this section.
let's go across to the mac and i'll connect this ipad to the mac using a usb cable. cross over to the mac, this is my macbook air, and it's running in the current version of itunes.it's also running it lion as well. i've reduced the screen resolution to make it fiton the ipad screen but all i need to do now is connect the ipad tothe mac using a usb cable. the ipad is recognized and this is the first timei have connected it to my mac so it's going to giveit a name. i'm just going to call it ipad2 rather thanscreencastsonline's ipad. ipad2.
it's set to automatically sync my songs to myipad. to automatically add photos is unchecked so it won't add photos and to automatically syncapplications to my ipad. i'm going to go ahead and accept the defaults andsay done. now the music contained within my itunes libraryon my mac will sync across to the ipad. now this isa relatively small library. this is just my test machine. we're nearlyfinished now copying across. that's the music completed and that's thesynchronization completed. across the top we see a number of tabs. we'lllook at all of these
individually but we're currently on the summarytab. on the top section we have the ipad itself, itsname, its capacity, the version of the software it's running, and it'sserial number. it's also picked up the fact that it's a whiteipad and that image will change dependent on it beingwhite or black. there is the version so it's currently up todate. you can click check for update to find out whether or not there's any new software or we can restore. if we're having problems with our ipad we can
restore it back to its original settings. you can do this without itunes with ios5 butlet's carry on. we've got backup, backup to icloud. that's the option we selected during the setupprocess. if you want to you can back it up to thiscomputer by selecting this radio button and then every time you connect youripad to your itunes it will back it up to this computer. the option to encrypt your ipad backup as well,if you select that. you can password protect it so that any settings, such as passwords
contained on the ipad, will also be backed up aswell. you'll see here it was last backed up to theicloud today earlier on this morning when i set it up. some options. to open itunes when the ipad isconnected. you'd normally want to leave that set. to sync with this ipad over wifi. if we wanted towe could disconnect the ipad and synchronize our music, our movies, our applications, etc wirelessly over the local wifi network. let's come back to that and check these other
options. to sync only checked songs and videos. if i go up to music, you'll notice that within music, if i go to the list viewyou'll see we have these check boxes. if you want to selectively enable or disablewhether or not a song is synchronized you can check or uncheck these boxesand that's all controlled, again, if we go back to the ipad andscroll down to the bottom this is to sync only checked songs andvideos. prefer standard definition videos, so if you don't want hd videos to be transferred across you canselect that option.
convert higher bit rate songs to 128 kilobits persecond aac. if you have some songs that have been encoded ina high bit rate normally that makes the song files themselvesmuch larger. you can select this option here and it willconvert them to smaller files so you can get more music onto your iosdevice. then the option to manually manage music andvideos. rather than automatically synchronize you have to manuallymanage that. configure universal access. let's just click onthat. this is to enable some of the accessibilitycontrols voice over, zoom,
use white on black display, speak autotext, andalso for hearing use mono, audio, or show closed captions whenavailable. i'll leave them as default. let's go back to syncwith this ipad over wifi. if i select that and then say apply. ok. my ipadis still connected via usb but if i disconnect it from my computernormally when you disconnect an ios device it will disappear fromthe sidebar but here we can see it's still connected on oursidebar. no cable connected. if i go back up to the topand say sync it will look for the ipad2 and then it will syncwirelessly.
there were no changes so nothing's been applied. as well as wirelessly updating the software orrestoring software via icloud from your ipad you can, if you want, goback to connecting the ipad to your mac or pc and then use the usb cableto update or restore its software. i'm going to leave it now as usingwifi for synchronization. before looking at the various tabs across the topof the page i just point out to you this capacity gauge down here atthe bottom. you can see this is a 16 gigabyte ipad. itcurrently has 0.32 gigabytes of audio installed, .07 gigabytes of video, justunder half a gigabyte
of other that is usually applications andapplication related data, and it's got 13 gigabytes of free space. let's have alook at the top. we've got summary we've had a look at. we'll lookat info. these are normally deselected and this is becausewe're using icloud to synchronize all this information to our ipad sothese are all deselected. if you don't use icloud you can sync your addressbook, your ical calendars, and mail accounts across using wifi ora usb connection. applications, these show the various applicationsinstalled on your ipad. you can use this as well to rearrange your homescreen and create folders.
we'll have a look at that on the ipad itself. butthis is set up by default to synchronize apps between your ipad and yourmac. tones, these are alerts so you can set up systemalerts to use various tones. we're currently syncing all the tones across fromthe mac. music, we're synching our music library. we've currently got it set to sync the entire musiclibrary. again, this is a relatively small music library,so it will all fit on the ipad. if you find that you have got a large musiclibrary and you want to be selective about what music you copy across, youcan choose selective
playlists, artists, albums and genres. so, for instance, if i select here, if i justwant to synchronize tomas dolby with my ipad, i just select the artistthomas dolby. i say apply. again, it will look wirelessly for the ipad and it will delete the music for jeff smith off the ipad. you'll notice the audio has now dropped down to.24 gigabytes. let me switch on entire music library. apply. it will now synchronize with the ipad and we'venow got .3 gigabytes of audio on there. and there wego.
you can see at the top its now synching the musici just deleted across. if you want more information about using itunes, check out some of the tutorials over at screencastsonline.com where itake a look at setting up playlists and how best to use playlists withyour ipad. ok, so that's music. let's have a look at movies. currently, i only have a single movie installed onthis mac. what i'm going to do, i'm going to synchronizethat across, automatically include all movies and thenwe'll say apply. and again, this will now transfer this movieacross to my ipad.
and you'll notice that the free space on the ipadhas reduced down to 11.8 gigabytes and the video has now gone up to1.4 gigabytes. so that video is quite large, will take a littlewhile to copy across. this particular video was bought and downloaded from the itunes music store and we'll have a lookat that later. we'll can leave that to synch in the background. let's have a look at tv shows. again, just asingle episode. and again, i'm going to say synch tv shows. andagain, apply. and that will sync it once the movie is finished.
other options, podcasts, so if you subscribe toany podcasts within the itunes store, you can synch them across to youripad as well. books, we'll look at books separately. if you have any purchased books, you can synchthem across to your ipad and also photos. now currently i haven't got iphoto or aperture installed on this particular mac. iphoto is a application you get with a packagecalled ilife. it's supplied with all new macs and, basically,it's a way to both
manage and organize your photos, and once you domanage and organize your photos on your mac, you can synch themacross to the ipad quite easily. it also supports synching photos from aperture,as well, which is the pro-sumer product, so if you're seriously intophotos and photography, you can use aperture as well to manage and updateyour photos on your mac. again, you can synchronize directly from apertureto your ipad. but, we'll look at photos a little bit later when we look at the photo applications on the ipad. so, back across over on the ipad, and just toshow you where the music
or the videos have ended up, if i just tap on themusic application down on the dock, and see there are my two albums by thomas dolby and jeff smith. i just come out of there by pressing the homebutton. i will go into all the applications in a separatesection, but this is really just to show you where the media has endedup. so we've got music in our music application. there is also a video application. if i tap on the videos application, you'll seethere's my music videos.
the thomas dolby music album does contain a music video, so that's ended up in the videoapplication. there's my tv programs and also the film that i synchronized across from itunes. again, tap on the home button and it takes usback into the main home screen. and over in settings, i just tap settings. ok, we've defaulted to general, you'll see under general there is an option for itunes wifi synch. if i just tap that option, see this machine, thisipad is configured to
automatically sync with itunes on your computerwhen your ipad is plugged into power and connected to wifi. so when you're recharging your ipad and if wifi is available, it will automatically synchronize. if you want to force a sync, you can just tapsync now. it will go ahead, find the macbook air, in thisinstance, do a synchronize. and there we go, it's synchronized. and we can come out of this section, out of thegeneral section by tapping on the general button in the top cornerand then come out of
settings by just tapping the home button. airplay is a technology built into ios5 thatallows you to transmit the video or audio currently playing on your ipadover onto an airplay enabled remote device either wirelessly or via aconnecting cable. for wireless airplay, you typically need your ipad and an apple tv or a third party airplay enableddevice. for cable airplay, you connect your ipad via it's 30 pin connector to a projector or high definition tv. there are subtle differences between the ipad 1and the ipad 2.
on the ipad 1, airplay will only work if anapplication has been specifically written to take advantage ofairplay, for instance, wirelessly streaming your photo slideshow to anapple tv or showing a keynote presentation via a hdmi connection to ahigh definition tv. if an application hasn't been written to support airplay, you won't be able to play it on anexternal device. the ipad 2 will do all this but will also allowyou to mirror the output of any ipad application wirelessly to an apple tv or via one of the cables.
now this is perfect for demonstrating on the ipad as everything on your ipad can be mirrored to theremote device. so, how do you switch on airplay? well, you'll find that, by default, if you haveairplay enabled devices within your environment, they will be picked upautomatically by the ipad. for example, if i go into the video application,i have my music video. let's tap on the music video and let's play it. and, when i play it, i will pause it straight away so you can see the airplay icon.
on the playback control panel, you'll notice wehave the standard controls, but also, on the right hand side, wehave the airplay icon. so if i just tap that, you'll see i have severaldevices. i have my ipad, which is checked. i have a kitchen airport express, unfortunately, i've misnamed my airport express in the kitchen.let's ignore that. i have my kitchen apple tv, living room apple tv and an apple tv in my daughter's bedroom. if i wanted to play this video on, say, my living
room apple tv, i just tap on selection. and you'll see that the video is playing on theliving room apple tv. tap the airplay icon again, tap the ipad and the video will now start playing on the ipad. let's just come out of the video and back to myvideo application. to switch on mirroring so that everything on theipad is broadcast using airplay, what i need to do is go back intothe multitasking bar and switch on the airplay icon in the additionalcontrols. this will only work on an ipad 2.
so, if i go into the multitasking bar, let's do a four-finger swipe up and then we'llscroll across to the right. right, there's my airplay icon. i tap that. because this is an ipad 2, i get the additionalmessage down on the bottom that with airplay mirroring you can sendeverything on your display to an apple tv wirelessly. if i now tap on my living room apple tv, there should be a new entry for mirroring. tap on that to switch it on, and that's it.
so everything now that i play on my ipad will bemirrored across wirelessly to my apple tv and i can vieweverything on my high definition tv. so that's airplay on the ipad. the next group of sections, i'm going to take youthrough all of the default applications that are provided with theipad. so, i'll not go into them in great detail but really just give you a flavor for how they areused. for more detailed information, go across to screencastsonline.com and have a look at the ipad
tutorials over there. but, let's start off firstwith mobile safari. safari is the web browser that's built into ios5. it's quite a sophisticated web browser, as well, and quite powerful. so if we open safari, mine is installed in thedock so i'll just tap to open safari. we have atoolbar across the top. toolbar has forward and back buttons, an icon togive you access to your bookmarks and, also, if we have a web pagein place, we can send the contents of the web page to various services. the url bar which i'm going to type in to, sothis is the url bar.
let me just type in apple.com. well, as you can see, safari already knows aboutapple.com. it's in its bookmarks. we'll check bookmarkslater. so i'll just tap on the existing bookmark. embedded within the toolbar we have this littleswirl which allows you to refresh the page, and we also have a googlesearch box. you can configure this to other search services. there all done through settings application, but we'll leave it set to google for now.
one thing you might notice is this is a tabbed browser, so we have this iphone 4 s page apple.com. if i hit the plus button, you'll see we get asecond tab and it's placed the cursor into the search term for me, so i can search for something. so again, let's search for screencastsonline.we'll hit that. it takes me to a google search. i can tap on the result and that takes mestraight there. so now i have apple in this tab and the screencastsonlinewebsite on the other.
let's create another tab. let's do a search for twitter, in fact, rather than backspacing, i can just tap the little x and justtype twitter. there's my suggestions. search for twitter. let's go to twitter.com. so i now have threetabs. and one more. rather than search, let's go to a url we know, bbc. - but rather than .co.uk, something clever, i can tap and hold rather than .com i can see .co.uk let go, that populates the url. hit go and ittakes me there. let's go to the news site. ok, four tabs.
i can move these tabs around, so i can drag and reorder these tabs quite easily. back to the newssite. i can zoom by using the two-finger pinch, so i can zoom into particular sections or zoom out again. i can tap and that will zoom into the varioussections. scroll just using my fingers. let's find aparticular article. let's say that article there. ok, scroll up. i can double tap and that will zoom the text forme. a really nice feature that's in mobile safari isthe ability to see the
web page without any of the clutter. this isn'ttoo bad. if i just scroll, there are features and analysisdown the side, those are links, and the text is really sort of off toone side. i can zoom in, double tap, but it would be niceto see that in a nice, clean presentation, especially if a web page isfull of advertisements, etc. well we can use feature up here called reader. you'll notice in the url box, reader. if i tap on reader, that basically takes thetext, the entire text of the article and presents it in this really nice, clean form.
you'll see the reader icon has turned purple. i can change the font by tapping here. i can make the font bigger or smaller. really nice way to read your articles on the web. if i tap reader again, it will pop it down. another option is to save this page to read later, so i can save it to what's called a reading list so if i now tap on this icon here, i can add abookmarks. if i want to keep a permanent reference of thisweb page, i can do.
i can add to my reading list, which we'll do. ok, and basically what has happened now is itsaved this url. if i tap on the bookmarks icon, you'll see i havea reading list. tap there, and there is the page ready for me toread later on. if i move away, if i close this tab down. let me close this page by tapping on the x nextto it. right, that's now gone. let's go back to my reading list, tap there andit will open the page for me. so the reading list is a way of storing sort of
temporary bookmarks that you can read later on. we've mentioned bookmarks and bookmarks can besynchronized across your ios devices, and your mac as well if you haveicloud, as well as the reading list gets synchronized. other things we can send our web pages to, so wecan add it to our home screen. so, for instance, if i go back to apple and let'ssay i wanted a special apple icon on my home page on my ipad soi could get to the apple website quickly without loading safari, ifi tap on the icon again, add to home screen. ok, there you go.
i can re-label it but we'll leave it as apple. tap on add, and there we go, there is a nice icon once i tap that icon, that will take me directlyto the web page. now that's great if you have any web applications that you use frequently, you can create an iconon your home page. the contacts application is your address book onthe ipad, and it's actually called the address book on the mac, but on theipad, apple has decided to call it contacts. now if you have an icloud account and if youalready have a mac and
you've set up contacts on your mac, they will beautomatically transferred from icloud directly onto your ipad. but i haven't got any set up on this particularmachine so what i'm going to do is go into the contacts application just by tapping the contacts icon. so let's go ahead and add our first contact, andthe way we do that is to tap the plus button at the bottom of the pageand then we get this page to enter our contact's details. what i will do is undock the keyboards.
if i tap and hold the keyboard symbol and say split. now we can see the whole page now. various fields. if i just scroll up and down you can see there are various fields i need tocomplete. let's go ahead and add a name. let's add our first user or our first contact.let's add in fred flintstone. as we all know he works in the slate rock andgravel company. we can add his mobile phone number. an option to add his iphone phone number as well.
of course, with fred being a good apple user hedoesn't have a normal mobile, he just has his iphone, so what i'll dois delete the original entry for mobile just by tapping on the minusbutton and tapping on delete. that's fine. his home phone number, his home email address, his work email address. we'll scroll up. i can give him a default ringtone or text tone so if we get an imessage in from fred i can get aspecial tone. i'll leave that. if he has a blog or home page ican type that in here. again, scroll. i can add a new address.
if i tap on a new address this is home address. we all know he lives in cavestone road but i think i'll temporarily move him to cupertino. let's putin one infinite loop. for those of you that don't realize, that'sapple's headquarters. let's change that from united kingdom. just tap in search, type in a u, united states. i could, as well at this point, add in his work address if i wanted to, just type add new address, but we'll leave that for now. we canadd some notes.
there are additional fields as well so i tap onthis button here. let's move the keyboard out of the way. i can add additional fields to do with his name, with his job title and department. his twitter handle. let's addtwitter handle in. there's a slight mistake there. i need to put thet in the middle. again, just tap and hold, position the entrypoint, and just type in t. that's better. i can add his facebook details in if i want butlet's not do that. ok. that's fine. scroll up again. let's just go backto the fields.
get the keyboard out of the way. his birthday. also related people such as his wife, etc. let'sgo ahead and put birthday in. let's give him a birthday of today but let's takeit back a bit. scroll way back. there we go. 1930. ok. that'sfine. tap away from the wheel and that selected it forus. ok. back up to the top. i could have added a photo, but probably for copyright reasons i better not add a photo offred in. what you can do, though, if you have got photosof people in your camera roll you can choose a photo or you cantake a new photo as well
so if you're with them you can take a photo anduse that photo. i'll leave the photo blank for now. now that we've set all his contact details upwe'll say done. there's our first entry for fred flintstone. ican see one error there. his home email address i've put me dash cominstead of dot com so let me tap edit at the bottom and, again, just tapand hold until i get the magnifying glass position insertion point. backspace. then a full stop. that's fine. we'llsay done. the things you can do with the information inyour contacts
application, this will integrate, by the way, with mail and imessage. that's why i wanted to show you this first before showing you those applications. when you're in the contacts list you can do such things as tap on these phone numbers. because i'm on the ipad obviously it can't make aphone call but what it will do is initiate a facetime conversationwith fred if they have an iphone. i can do that. i can go straight to email and send him an email.
if i tap on his email address that'll create an email for me nicely addressed with the standardsignature in. let's cancel that for now. we'll delete thedraft. we'll look at mail after we've looked at the contacts list. let's just goback to mail. several ways. i can double tap the home button to get themultitasking bar up, swipe it with four fingers, or just use a fourfinger swipe to the left. that takes me back there. send him an email from his work address type onthe work email.
go to his blog, that blog might exist, , but iwon't tap on it. that will open safari if i tap on his home page. let's have a go. let's tap on fred's blog, see iffred has got a blog. no it hasn't. ok. no worries. forefinger swipe up. let's go back to contacts. if i tap on his home address that opens the mapsapplication, drops a pin at that address, and i can see here that thatis the cupertino campus. i can tap at this little curl at thebottom and have a look at the satellite view. we can see thebuilding.
some nice things as well. i can look at theinformation. there's fred's information. i can edit at this point but i don't want to dothat so let's tap away. i can also tap on the pin and go into googlestreet view and scroll around. there's a view of apple headquarters. let's go back by tapping the little round symbolat the bottom. back into contacts, i'll double tap the homebutton this time, tap on contacts. if i want to send fred a twitter message i canjust tap on his twitter
handle, send him a tweet, or view the tweets thathe's sent. let me just add a few more contacts in. there'ssome additional contacts. these are all people who are on the macroundtable podcast and basically i can just tap away. if i want to go tomyself there's my record there. one thing i forgot to mention is ifyou scroll down to the bottom you'll see buttons that allow you todo things with the contact information. i can send a message to thiscontact, i can share the contact. if i tap on that i can either send these contact details off in an email or in a message. i won'tdo that for now.
because there's an iphone or ios deviceassociated with this account i can also facetime with them and an option toadd to favorites. one last thing about the contact list, what i would suggest you do, is go into settings. double tap the home button to get to settings. then under mail, contacts, and calendar youscroll down to find contacts. you can change the sort order, the display order, and you can sign which actual record is youractual info. let's select that one. i am don mcallister.
that is used in various applications. it needs to know sometimes which contact addressor which contact information relates to you as the owner of the ipad. back out again. it's four finger swipe up this time back tocontacts. that's a quick overview of the contactsapplication on the ipad. mail is a very important application on the ipadand consequently apple have given us a really nice, full featured mailclient. to get into mail, you can see here in the dock i
have my mail icon with three unread email items. if i just tap on the mail icon. again, i'm recording this in landscape view. most of the sections in this particular screencast are recorded in landscape view. it's just easier to view some of the features but sometimes the application does change if youchange orientation. mail is one of those applications. in landscapeview we get the contents of, by default, our inbox on the left hand paneland then the contents
of the mail on the right hand panel. you can change that just by holding it inportrait mode. if i just turn this around you'll see that theside panel disappears and you can read the mail fullscreen. i can move through the mail at this point bytapping the buttons at the top. if i move down to the next mail item there's thenext one. welcome to icloud mail. if i want to get back to my list of mails i just swipe in from the left hand side and there we are.
to remove that panel just swipe back across tothe left. let me put this back in landscape mode becauseit's easier for me to record in this particularformat. ok. there's my icloud mail. the first one. if i just tap on that email at the top that'stwitter. this is asking me to confirm my twitter account that i set up in another module. as you can see the link is highlighted so i canjust tap on the link and that'll take me to safari and authorize myaccount.
we'll do that later. we'll just go back to mailby doing a four finger swipe to the left and there we are back in mail. it is possible to organize your mail intodifferent mailboxes. as you can see from the top of the left hand column, this is our inbox with one unread mailitem. if i tap on the mailboxes button i can see myinbox and i can see my trash. i tap on edit and down at the bottom we have anew mailbox button. tap on that and then i can create a new mailbox. let's call this one work mail. we'll put thekeyboard away.
by default the mailbox location is icloud. you can create subfolders or sub-mailboxes if youwant but i'm just going to leave it at the top level and there'sour work mail and we'll say done. back to our inbox. as far as the mail item itself, we have a detailslink. i can view the details, who it came from. i can also mark it as flagged or unread if i wantto. you'll notice on the left hand side we get that blue button to indicate the mail is unread.
let's hide those details. four icons across thetop. if i want to file or move this mail to another mailbox i can tap on that particular icon. let's say i wanted to move this message to mywork mail folder. tap on there and there it goes. it's gone. options to trash or to delete. i can also reply as well, so reply, forward, orprint. print is interesting. you can print your emails. in fact, print isavailable throughout the
system but you do need to have wireless air printcompatible printers on your network and your ipad will go ahead andfind those on your local area networks. currently they're only selected hp, epson, andcanon models but if you go across to google and google for air printcompatible printers you'll find them. juts a quick tip, if you're a mac user installprintopia from ecam on your mac and you'll be able to print to printersconnected to macs on your local area network. let's say i wanted to reply.just tap reply and there
we go. it's addressed for us, cc/bcc field, thesubject, and then an area where i can start typing in myreply. then once i'm ready i can just hit send and itwill go. let me just cancel that one for now. forward isthe same. if i click forward i am now able to forward thisemail to somebody else. i'll put that out of the way. to send an email we tap on this last icon on theheader bar. let me dock and merge the keyboard. there we go. if i want to address it i just tap in the tofield.
i can either start typing and it will recognizethe names in people in my address book. if i start typing don it's found don mcallisterat my work email address. if i had a home email address that would appear here as well but i can address it simply as that. if i want to send it to someone else as well, say i need to peruse my address book, i can't remember a person'sname, if i tap on the plus button that gives me access to all of my contacts. let's send a mail to fred flintstone as well, hehas two email addresses.
let's send that to his home email address. i can tap into the cc and bcc field and thatexpands. i can copy someone on the message or i can blindcopy them as well so bcc. blind copy just means other recipients won't know i sent it to that particular person. type in a subject, tap in the body, and type inyour email. i mistyped there but it's recognized i meant tosay ipad so just hit return, that's fine. don't forget we can use our keyboard shortcutsthat we set up before in
here. if i wanted to put in screencastsonline ijust type in sco and that will replace it with screencastsonline forme. my website as well, sco web, return. i won't sendit to fred flintstone. i've used a made-up email address but that mightbe a real person so i'm going to tap back into the to field, i'mgoing to hit the backspace key, highlight fred, backspace again, and he'snow gone. my email is now ready to send. i'll just tap onsend and that's gone. i have received that email on my other machineand i'm just going to reply it so we have some new mail coming in. i'llsend it from my mac.
it will refresh periodically but if you want toforce a refresh if we just tap this button down in the bottom left handcorner. there we go. it's come in. if i tap on there there is my response and thereis the original email below. another way to handle your mail, rather thantapping on the icons on the top, if you want to do it in bulk you cantype edit and then you can select the mails that you want. let's saythat one and that one. then i can either delete them using the buttonsat the bottom, i can move them in bulk, or i can mark them asflagged or unread in bulk.
let's go ahead and move these two to my workmail. there they go. i've now got a clear inbox. by the way, when you do create a new email you'llnotice you have this 'sent from my ipad' signature put inautomatically. if you want to change that we cancel. let's go to my settings panel again and then under mail, contacts, and calendars, you scroll, thereyou go signature. tap on signature and you can overwrite that orleave it in and append to it. what i would tend to do is delete these and saycheers, don.
come back out. there's my new signature. back across to mail with a four finger swipe, tapon new mail, and there's my new signature. let'scancel that. that's just a quick run-through on mail on theipad. ios5 has a calendar application to allow you torecord your dates and events. and again, if you have an icloud account, it willsynchronize your appointments and your events across all your iosdevices and also your mac as well. what i need to do is go intocalendar. the first view that you see is this day view.it's like a daybook.
actually, i've not entered any events in here, but it has picked up fred flinstone's birthday. if you remember back to the contacts module, iset up fred's birthday as today. consequently, in the calendar it's showing mefred flintstone's birthday. let's have a quick look at the interface and i'llshow you how to add events. at the top we have a button for calendars. by default we have a home calendar and a workcalendar. if i edit i can add additional calendars if i want. i won't at this point, so we'll say "done," andtap away. invitations.
no invitations at the moment. that's basically if someone invites you to ameeting. you can accept or reject any invitations. they will appear there for you. this is the dayview. if we scroll down across the bottom you can jumpto any of the days just by using that scroller. now we can go back to today by tapping on thetoday button in the bottom left hand corner. if i want to jump a month, you'll see january isat the end of this row.
i can tap on january. that will take me tojanuary. then i can scroll within january. if i tap on the arrow, that will take me on a dayby day basis. let's go back to today. let's leave the other views until we've addedsome events in. we click the plus button. let's arrange, say, lunch. location, let's say it's going to be a swankylondon restaurant. it's going to be today, so we'll start not at ten. let's say we'll start at one. and then we'll tapon ends.
we'll finish at four. it's not going to be an all day event and thetime zone is london. that's fine, so we'll say "done." i can set it torepeat. i wouldn't repeat a lunch appointment but it wassomething that was going to happen at the same time every week orthe same time every day, you can set up a recurring event. invite people,so if i type in joe. now i've got two js, joe bloggs and jonathan, butif i just type joe i could select from that point.there we go. there's joe bloggs. let's select joe bloggs.
we'll say "done." that will now send an email off to joe bloggs. it's actually myself under a pseudonym. once i receive that email i can reply to theinvitation. i can set up an alert, so if i want to be alertedi can set up a reminder at the time of the event, minutes before, hoursbefore, or days before. we'll say "cancel" for that one. use my workcalendar. i can select home or work or whichever other calendars i've got set up and my availability.
i can also put a url in, as well, which can referto anything. let's put the url of the restaurant. so .co.uk. i'll just tap and hold the .com. select .co.uk and then some notes as well. butlet's just say "done." i can see my appointments on the left hand side.lunch with joe. no replies yet from joe bloggs. the url of therestaurant. i can tap on that. that will take me straightthere. there we go. let's double tap the home button and go back tomy calendar.
really now, i just need to wait for joe to replyto my invitation. on my iphone i just had a message. lunch with joeat the ivy, 1:00. let me just respond to that from my iphone. i'mgoing to accept. ok, i've just accepted on my iphone, so we should see something come back soon to show that joe hasnow replied. while we're waiting for that, let's set upanother appointment. i hit the plus button. this time, let's say it'sgoing to be a meeting. it's going to be tomorrow at 10:00 til 11:00. that's fine. we'll say, "done" and done.
i won't bother again with any of the otherdetails. let's now flip the page and take me to friday. let's have a look at some of the views. we've got week view, so there's my two eventsthat i've set up. i can see fred's birthday in the top. the all day events up here at the top, and youcan scroll up and down to see the different events at the set timeperiods. i have a month view. again, very easy to summarize and have a look. again, i can scroll to any month by using theslider at the bottom.
go back to today. a year view. this is quite clever in that it's color coded. it's sort of like a map of when you are most busy. if you have one or two events it will be yellowor blue. if you have more than one or two events it goesto red. you can quite easily see across the year whenyour most busiest time is. and then we also have a list view, as well. let'sgo back to day. now you can see here that joe has accepted mylunch invitation. that's fine. and that's the calendar.
this section is about photos and also the camerabuilt into the ipad. now the ipad 1, the original ipad, doesn't haveany cameras, whereas the ipad 2 has, in fact, twocameras. it has a rear facing camera, and that's thecamera on the back of the ipad that points away from you when you hold theipad screen in front of you. that enables you to take high resolution stillphotos and also hd movies. there's a second camera on the front edge whichis the forward facing camera. you would use that normally to use such applications as facetime, so you can take a videoof your face.
to get to the camera, and we'll start with the camera first, you need to tap on the camera iconon the home screen. this is going to be difficult because i'm in myconservatory. i couldn't track down either of my two cats to act as models for this particular photo shoot. but basically, i've got some good daylight here so i'm just going to take a photo of the couch. i just tap the photo button on the bottom bar andthat takes our first photo. now to get to that photo i can just swipe to the
right and see immediately the results of myhandywork. swipe back to the left and i'm back to the camera. now let's take another photo, this time, perhaps,of the christmas tree. i can also take a video. i can slide the videoslider to the right, tap the shutter button, and now i'm taking video. let'sjust pan over to the left. tap the button again. and that's my video. i can switch cameras by tapping the camera iconup in the top. i can get to the images and videos i've takendirectly from the camera by tapping on the camera roll icon down in the bottomleft hand corner, but
let me come out by going to the home page. what i will do is go into the photos application. these are the two images and the video that itook. i also have access to albums. at the moment, i have a single album, which is mycamera roll. and also, had i enabled gps location, i couldaccess places as well. that would show me where i took the photos. let's go back to photos. from this page, i can doseveral things. i can start a slideshow off. there's a slideshowbutton.
if i tap that, you can add music and transitionsin if you want to, but i won't do a slideshow atthis point. i can either delete photos or share them bytapping on the button in the top right hand corner. i canshare, copy, and delete. if i want to delete a particular photo, i justtap on the photo. the middle one is selected and tap delete. buti'm not going to tap it for now. i can also add it to an album, so if i wanted to start creating albums i just say, "add to," "addto new album." let's say i wanted to create a christmas album.we'll say "save"
now we have a camera roll and also our christmasalbum. let's go back to photos. there's my three photos. if i tap on an individual photo, say this firstone, i am now able to edit the photo. if i tap edit ihave some new controls. i can do such things as rotate. tap down at thebottom. i can rotate the photo. there's an option toenhance. i'll do an auto enhance. actually, not too good,to be honest. let's revert to original by tapping on the buttonat the top. ok, that's fine. i can also remove red eye.
if i have people in the photos that have red eyes, i can use the red eye control. tap each red eye. of course, i haven't got any to remove, so wewon't do that. i'll say "cancel." and also to crop, as well. i can put this grid on and just grab one of the corners and just crop the photo to wherever iwant. i can put in constraint, so if i want it to be square or set proportions i can do that. but we'll just leave it as it is and we'll say,"crop."
tap on the top corner and that crops our photo. let's revert back to original again. we'll cancelediting. i can swipe to get to the next photo, tap it, and get the same controls up again. from here, i cando a slideshow. i can share from here, as well. i can email. i can send it via a message. assign it to acontact, so if i've taken someone's face i can put that in their contact details. useas wallpaper. i want to use it as my wallpaper on my ipad.tweet it, print it, or copy. the next icon is the airplay, so i can tap onairplay and see the
airplay devices that i can send or display thisphoto on. and then the last option is to delete it. send itto the trash. delete everywhere. it knows it's in my camera roll and it also is inan album. let's just say "no," to that. again, let me just come back out to the homescreen. there is another service related to icloud todo with photos. that's photostream. that's the ability, if you have an icloudaccount, to seamlessly upload
and download photos between all your differentdevices automatically. for instance, i have an ipod touch which i've configured to use the same icloud account. if i just open up the photos application. let's come out of here and go to photos. i've got photos, albums, and places. ok, let'scome out. let's go to settings. and then under icloud you'll see there is anoption here for photostream. if i switch that on.
as you can see, photostream automatically uploadsnew photos to icloud and downloads them to all of your devices whenconnected to wifi. if i take another photo on this device it will goup to my icloud. it will appear on my ipod touch. it will also appear on my mac because i haveiphoto configured for photostream, as well. let me justdemonstrate that to you. rather than take a photo from here, i'll go intomy ipod touch and take a photo. that should miraculously appear within my photosapplication.
if i go back into photos, you'll see there's anew option now, photostream. currently there are no photos. it stores the last 30 days of your photos onicloud. you can then drag them out into various albums orother places. let's go ahead on my ipod touch. let's just take a simple photo of a little remotecontrol on my desk. that photo has now been taken. we'll just give it a few seconds for it to upload to icloud and then it should appear within ourphotostream. there it is.
ok, literally a few seconds and there is thephoto. as i say, not a particularly good photo, but thisis great because if you have an iphone or an ipod touch and you'reout and about, and you take some photos and then get to a wifi hotspotimmediately those photos will be uploaded to icloud and thendownloaded to your ipad, downloaded to your mac, all seamlessly andautomatically. i just open that up. i'll tap on it. there it is. i'd say a bit grainy. it's a very old ipod touch, but you get the principle. tap again. back to photostream. select the photo.add to new album.
gadgets. and have a new album called gadgets. that's photos on the ipad. the messages application is new within ios5 and uses a new technology called imessage. basically what imessage allows you to do is tosend messages and photos and videos to anyone else that has an ios enableddevice. that's anyone else who has an iphone, anyone else who has an ipad, or anyone else who has an ipodtouch. what you can do, if we go into messages...
if i wanted to send a message to joe bloggs. joeis in my address book. he has an iphone, so it comes with this littleblue bubble so it knows that's going to be an imessage i'll send to him. i just address it. enter mymessage here. "hi, joe. how's it going?" i can send him a photo. let's choose one of my existing photos. let'ssend him the photo of the gadget. say, "use," and then we'll say, "send." that'ssending the message across. joe will see my photo of my gadget. once joereceives it and starts replying, you'll see there is a little bubble at the bottomwith three dots.
that shows me that joe has received the messageand is replying. let's way for the message to come in. there wego. it looks good. a couple of other things to point out. you'llnotice that it says "delivered." we have confirmation that the message wasdelivered to joe, and also joes response. we can just communicate now using imessage. it'scompletely free. but anyway, that's imessage and the messagesapplication. we've touched on music and videos already in theearlier synchronizing with itunes section, and as you will have seen in thatsection if we go to
the music application, i have two albums that ihave synchronized across from itunes. tap the home button once to go back tothe home screen. tap on videos. i have a film and a tv program and also a music video, all synchronized across from itunes on mymac. you can access the itunes store directly fromyour ipad and either purchase new music or videos or tv shows, butalso download purchases that you've made before. if i go into the itunesstore, you'll see pretty
much the same as the app store before. it's avery similar layout. we've got access to all sorts of content that wecan buy--music, films--these are all tabs along the bottom--tvprograms, etc. or if i have an existing apple id that i'vealready purchased content with, i can jump straight to my purchased tab,and this shows me all the content that i've purchased from itunes. so if i want to download something--let's say mymark king album--either individual tracks or the wholealbum--i can just tap on the little cloud symbol next to the tracks orlet's do the whole album.
i tap on that cloud symbol, it will download thatfor me. that's prompting me for my apple id password, solet me just enter that. we'll say ok. and if we tap on the downloads tab, we can seethose downloads occurring. if we go across to the music app--let's go to our home screen, tap in music and there's the newalbum being downloaded. i tap on the album and you can see the download progress of each individual track. right, they'reall downloaded. i can start playing the track. i've got playcontrols at the top.
let me just pause that. there's a slow quietintro. i can access the album art directly. i can tap again and bring up some other controls --the same controls but in a dark format ratherthan a light format. we'll carry on from here. i can cycle or repeatby tapping on this icon. i can scrub through the track. i just grab thatorange bar. i can scrub through for more sort of granularscrubbing, if i move my finger further down i can move backwards andforwards to scrub more slowly. as i go toward the top it's faster. i can set itto repeat.
i can also go into genius as well, you know, unfortunately, because this is a small library on the ipad, there aren'tenough related songs to create a genius playlist, but once you havelots of songs it will create a genius playlist for you. genius basically means grouped together--songs ofa similar genre. so you can create your own genius playlists. option to change the volume and also an airplay button to stream the music to an airplay device. down the bottom, access to your playlists, toyour songs, artists,
albums, and more genres and composers and then asearch panel. let's have a quick look at the video player. now because of the way i have my machine configured, i can actually play the video on the screen. i'm using an external capture device so it thinksit has a tv connected. so when i go into a video, i get the standard screen--gives you information about the video andthen a play button. if i do tap play, the video is appearing on my second screen, but you can see the controls.
these are the standard controls that we have forvideo playback. airplay again, so i can stream to another device and scrub backwards and forwards through thevideo. it's all very straightforward. and let's say done. so that's music, video and the itunes store onthe ipad. the reminders application is a very simpleapplication to enable you to create very basic to-dos or reminders foryourself. and again, if you have an icloud account, they are synchronized across your ios devices. so i gointo the reminders application.
i can add a quick reminder, "get some milk." i can tap on the reminder and get into thedetails. so i have the title, when to remind me on a particular day--say that's going to be tomorrowat 9:00. i'll say "done" and if i want it to be arepeating event, so every day, every week, every two weeks, etc. i can do, butwe'll say "none," so that's fine, let's cancel that. show more, set apriority--it's high priority. i'll say done, and then some notes -- semi-skimmed. and i can delete it also from this point if iwant,
but we'll say done, so that's my reminder set fortomorrow at 9:00. now you can create different types of reminderlists. so currently i have one set for reminders--if isay edit, create new list that's called shopping. ok, so there's my new shopping list. and to change the order i use these grab handlesat the sides. let's move that to the top and we'll say done. once i've completed the reminder, just a tap--go into completed. you'll see it now appears in my completed list.
now there's also a date view as well, to show you various dates, so you can have a look around. very simple, very neat, very effective way of creating simple reminders on your ipad. newsstand is a new feature in ios5 that allows you to purchase newspapers and magazines. but the nice thing with newsstand is once you'vepurchased a particular periodical it will be pushed to your ipadautomatically when it's published. so for instance if you have a three-monthsubscription to a particular
newspaper, every time that newspaper ispublished, it will be pushed out to your device so that you don't have to godownload it each time. now the first time i use it obviously i will haveto download some content. but let me go ahead and go into newsstand, currently empty. so i can go to the newsstand store. you will find there's quite a few periodicals that do allow you to download some free content justto try them out. so let's say for instance the national geographicmagazine. so go ahead and say, install. there, it installsit onto my newsstand.
i see the front page of the current edition. sothere we have it. i tap on there, takes me into national geographic. i would like to send new issues and pushnotifications and i'll say ok. i haven't got any previous purchases but if i hadi could restore them at this point, so no thanks. ok, so there'soptions there to buy individual episodes. there is a subscription as well or i can downloadthe sampler. so let me go ahead and download the sampler. ok, 37 megabytes coming down. ok, let me go aheadand view.
and there's my periodical. i can scroll through, read through. some instructions here. now each particular magazine tends to havedifferent controls, so they normally give you some help on how to access them. i come up back to my home screen, and then goback to the store. let's pop another periodical on the newsstandand gt porsche--let's have a look at that. that's free, i'll install that. and again, itappears on the stand. it has the front page of the current issue.
once it's installed, i can tap in, i will say okfor notifications. ok, so there's one issue at 2.99 and you can just swipe through and decide which one you want to buy. so the application is free, but the actualperiodicals themselves do have a cost normally, although you can sometimesfind a sample that you can use. let's have a look at special issues. these are allpay for content. back out, and there are my two periodicals. now when you do get a new issue--so i'vesubscribed to national geographic--what will happen is the cover willchange to the current
issue and you'll also get a little flash in thecorner indicating that a new episode is available. ok, so that'snewsstand. the game center application which i have on my other screen, so let me just swipe across. there it is on the top left-hand corner. game center is a way for you to connect withfriends and have a look at things as leader boards and ratings and basicallybe more social when you do play games. more and more games are nowbeing written to take advantage of game center and the features that ithas.
so let's start off game center. ok, i'm going to log in using my standard appleid. let me just first pop in my password. i'll saydone. ok, so i'm scotutor3. let me just tap on account and view account. there are some settings to be aware of. so game invites, we currently allow friends toinvite you to play games. you have a privacy setting, so currently you havea public profile, which can either be on or off.
so when it's off, only your friends can see your profile, including your real name. game center will recommend you to other playersand your nickname will be used on public leaderboards. i switch that on, you'll see that the main changehere is that your profile, including your real name, will bevisible to other players. i'm going to leave that off for now. there are various things down here--your verified emailaddress. you can add additional emails to get notifications
from, and then your nickname. you can change that--tap on it and change it. and also your account id, your apple id, and thecountry that you belong to. so we'll say done. and basically that's it. you're now logged into game center. you can seeyour friends. currently i don't have any friends joined to meon game center. i can tap the plus button and send a friendrequest to someone, say i would like to be their friend and they can joinme in game center, but i'll say cancel for now.
if you want to see what games are enabled forgame center, tap on games. it shows you all the different games that you can download, install and play with your friends. and then there's an option here under requests to see what requests have gone out. now to be honest, i'm not a big game player, so i haven't used game player very much. but if you check it out, i'm sure if you are a gamer, it will really add to the experience.
ok, so that's game center on ios5. maps is a great addition to the ipad, and one ofthose applications that you can really demonstrate it to its fullpotential. now if we go into the maps application, it's rememberedthat we were last looking at one infinite loop, which is where weplaced fred flintstone, i can use a two-finger pinch to zoom in and out.it looks really nice. tap on the page curl, have a look at a differentview, so standard view, satellite--which we just looked at--hybrid,which gives us both the overlay of road names on top of the map andalso terrain.
ok, let's put it back to satellite view. options also for traffic--you probably noticed.traffic we can drop pins. an easy way to drop pin is to just to place yourfinger on and then you'll see a drop pin will appear with theapproximate address of where you dropped it--let me zoom in slightly. so if i wanted to move this pin, just move it to that road junction, do a street view, and i canlook around. ok, tap on the symbol to come out. now what i can also do is get directions.
so directions--that's directions from where mypin is currently now to where i last dropped a pin, which was thecupertino address. and if i have a look here it would take me--if i tap on the car, it would take me three minutes. tap on the bus--there are no public transportdirections. tap on the person--it would take me 12 minutes towalk. tap on start, and it shows you the route. i can zoom in and see exactly where i need to go towalk to cupertino. now options also for getting your currentposition, and also for
looking at the addresses of those in yourcontacts list. now let's do a quick search. if we go to here and search for say moscone, do asearch for the moscone center in san francisco where the annualmacworld expo is--did i mean moscone--yes, i did. so we'll tap yes. ok, so there are some hotels--sponsored link thati can see there on that drop pin--do a quick streetview. and we have the moscone center. very, very clever. and let's just pop out and back to the main view.
and that's maps on the ipad. now to finish offwith the final three applications, just really to tell you about themand what they are. we have photo booth, and that uses the forward-facing camera to take some weird andwhacky photos of yourself. we have facetime, which allows you again, usingthe forward-facing video camera, to video conference with friendsand contacts and also we have the youtube application, which allows youaccess to youtube videos.
all of those applications very simple to use. once you've used them you'll soon get used tothem. so anyway, that's it for this particular tutorial. i hope that i've given you enough information tobecome an expert in the ipad. the best way to use this video is once you've seen it through is to keep it as reference. use the chapter pop-up list to jump to the various chapters and just review some of the information. now some of it may appear a bit complex, especially to learning the
gestures, etc, but once you've used it fora while you will find that the ipad is probably the easiest computerthat you've ever owned. now if you want any more information about ipadapplications, from january i will doing some new weekly video tutorials allabout the ipad over at screencastsonline.com. so go across to screencastsonline.com/ipad andthose tutorials will go into more details about the ipad, but also i'llbe looking at additional applications that you can download andinstall to make the most out of your ipad and also your iphone aswell if you're an iphone user.
so this is don mcallister signing off. i hope you enjoyed this particular tutorial, and i will speak to you on the next one.
